As you can see from the smile on my face, I enjoyed visiting Pike’s Peak in Colorado Springs, Colorado this past summer. I had the fortunate opportunity to join five teachers and our Success for All Facilitator on a two-day literacy training. Since Roosevelt has made additions to our teaching staff, we decided to attend a SFA training in Colorado Springs to enhance our ability to effectively teach your child how to be outstanding readers.
I would like to welcome all of our families, community members and others who are reading our website to Roosevelt West Side School of Excellence. I am extremely excited about moving into my second year as Principal of Roosevelt Elementary. We have a strong tradition of academic excellence and we will all be working hard to help each of our young scholars achieve.
This year we are committing our efforts to the following four outcomes:
1) By the end of 2011, sixth grade student's reading vocabulary will be at or above their reading comprehension instructional level as measured by the G.R.A.D.E assessment or comparable assessment tool.
2) Each grade level will score at or above the 75th% in the Number Sense strand by the 2011 MCA Math Assessment.
3) By the 2011 school year, 75% (30/40) of the licensed staff will have completed Responsive Classroom 3® training. Right now, 25% (10/40) have received Responsive Classroom 3® training. Any new teachers within this three year period will receive Responsive Classroom 1® training by the end of their first year at Roosevelt.
4) The goal will be to increase our use of culturally relevant curriculum which highlights racial, cultural, language and religious groups. One emphasis will be on incorporating a Social Action Approach in our academic and social curriculum. In their schoolwork and actions, students will be able to display an increased awareness of important social issues.
We decided upon these outcomes through engaging conversations with parents, staff and students. By focusing our efforts on achieving these outcomes, Roosevelt staff will work together in Professional Learning Communities and collaborate with each other on a regular basis to ensure that each of our students make the appropriate gains in their learning.
As principal, I am devoted to the success of Roosevelt. My mission is to create a learning environment where each child reaches the highest level of academic achievement as desired by our parents, community and national standards. My values began many years ago as a teenager when I worked as a counselor at my favorite church camp. These values followed me through my years as a classroom teacher and my values are just as strong today:
• We must model. • We must support. • We must provide.
I have enjoyed getting to know the many wonderful individuals who are involved with Roosevelt Elementary and continue to trust that each of us involved in the success of Roosevelt will continue to support one another as we move forward in educating our children.
