The English Language Learner program at Roosevelt Elementary concentrates on reading skills in the morning (reading blocks) and language through content in the afternoon.  In the morning, ELL students and general classroom students are grouped according to grade and reading level.  Groups are flexible and change on an 8 week cycle.  Many students receive their ELL instruction in their morning 90 minute reading block.  The remainder of the ELL students receive their ELL instruction through Writers’ Workshop instruction in the afternoon.  Fluent Spanish speaking students receive reading instruction in their native language and are later transitioned into English.  Kindergarten ELL students receive 30 minutes of ELL instruction time daily.
